The S.O.T.A. Martial Arts Fitness Challenge tests your overall physical fitness with push ups, chin ups, and abdominal crunches in addition to the 5K/10K run. Push ups, chin ups, and abdominal crunches will be scored based on the total number of reps recorded for each event. 5K participants will be given a score based on their final time. 10K participants will be scored based on their 5K average. The scores will be totaled and the winners will be based on the highest score.

Scoring and Events

The sequence of events will be push ups, chin ups, then abdominal crunches. Movement from one event to the next should allow adequate time to recover, stretch, and drink water.

Chin-Up: Procedures

The goal of the chin-up event is to execute as many accurate and complete chin-ups before dropping off the bar as possible.

  • 2 minute time limit.
  • Sweatshirts will be removed during the conduct of the chin-up event in order to observe the lockout of the elbows with each repetition.
  • Assistance to the bar with a step up, being lifted up, or jumping up is authorized. Any assistance up to the bar will not be used to continue into the first chin-up.
  • The bar must be grasped with both palms facing to the rear.
  • The correct starting position begins when the arms are fully extended beneath the bar, feet are free from touching the ground or any bar mounting assist, and the body is motionless.
  • Legs may be positioned in a straight or bent position, but may not be raised above the waist.
  • One repetition consists of raising the body with the arms until the chin is above the bar, and then lowering the body until the arms are fully extended; repeat the exercise. At no time during the execution of this event can a competitor rest his chin on the bar.
  • The intent is to execute a vertical “dead hang” chin-up. A certain amount of inherent body movement will occur as the chin-up is executed. However, the intent is to avoid a pendulum-like motion that enhances the ability to execute the chin-up. Whipping, kicking, kipping of the body or legs, or any leg movement used to assist in the vertical progression of the chin-up is not authorized. If observed, the repetition will not count for score.
  • A repetition will be counted when an accurate and complete pull-up is performed.
  • Stopping is not permitted. Any pause longer than 3 seconds will be considered stopping.
  • Females have the option of completing a timed hang. The score will be based on the amount of time that the contestant can hold their chin above the bar.
Abdominal Crunch: Procedures

The goal of the abdominal crunch event is to execute as many proper and complete crunches within the prescribed time limit.

  • 2-minute time limit.
  • On a flat surface, contestants will lie flat on their back with shoulder blades touching the deck, knees will be bent, and both feet will be flat on the deck.
  • The arms will be folded across the chest or rib cage with no gap existing between the arms and chest/rib cage. Both arms must remain in constant contact with chest/rib cage throughout the exercise. A single repetition consists of raising the upper body from the starting position until both forearms or elbows simultaneously touch the thighs, and then returning to the starting position with the shoulder blades touching the deck.
  • The buttocks will remain in constant contact with the deck throughout the event. No arching of the lower back or lifting the buttocks is permitted.
  • An assistant may be used to hold a contestants legs or feet, at or below the knees in whatever manner that is most comfortable for the contestant. Kneeling or sitting on the contestants feet is permitted.
  • A repetition will be counted when an accurate and complete abdominal crunch is performed.
  • Stopping is not permitted. Any pause longer than 3 seconds will be considered stopping.
Push Ups: Procedures

The goal of the Push Up event is to execute as many proper and complete push ups within the prescribed time limit as possible.

  • 2-minute time limit.
  • On a flat surface, competitors will assume the plank position. Your feet may be together or up to 12 inches apart. When viewed from the side, your body should form a generally straight line from your shoulders to your ankles. Females have the option of performing the push ups on their knees however this type of push ups will not receive as many points as a standard push up. Changing the type of push ups after the test has started will not be permitted.
  • Begin the push-up by bending your elbows and lowering your entire body as a single unit until your chest touches the bag glove. Then, return to the starting position by raising your entire body until your arms are fully extended. Your body must remain rigid in a generally straight line and move as a unit while performing each repetition.
  • Stopping is not permitted. Any pause longer than 3 seconds will be considered stopping.
3.1 Mile Run: Procedures

The goal is for a competitor to complete the measured course as quickly as possible.

  • This is a timed event.
  • The Competitor will complete a measured course. The time will start when the start command is given or when the competitor crosses the start mat. Each competitor’s time will be recorded as they cross the finish line.

Why:  All proceeds will benefit the Women’s Center of Beaver County.

What:  The S.O.T.A. Martial Arts Fitness Challenge is used to test students for the minimum level of fitness required  for each rank. It was developed by combining elements of the fitness testing used by the U.S. Marine Corps and the U.S. Army.

Awards:

  • TROPHIES!! Top three overall men and women receive a very unique 24″, 26″, or 28″ trophy.  Check our Facebook page for pictures.
  • The top three men and women in each age group will also receive an award!
  • All participants who are interested in signing up for martial arts classes are eligible for a $5.00 discount off the purchase of a uniform.

Participants: Limited to the first 80 participants to sign up.  Spots fill quickly, please register early.

Can I still participate in the The Fitness Challenge if I sign up for the Fun Walk?:  Absolutely! However, Fun Walk participants who sign up for the S.O.T.A Martial Arts Fitness Challenge will be given a score of zero for the 5k portion. Fun Walk participants will be scored for push ups, chin ups, and abdominal crunches only.
